Moody Boho Dining Room - Shop the Look

One thing I always tell my clients is that I want them to feel like their home represents them as individuals. That is one reason I so greatly love the Boho aesthetic. The Boho style embraces natural textures, metallic accents, and saturated colors. It’s not about following rules and fitting a mold. It incorporates exotic touches and personal favorites. It feels relaxed, eclectic, and sophisticated at the same time, all while not abiding by any rules other than what you love.

For this week’s Shop the Look, may I present a Moody Boho Dining Room. This room is for deep conversation and long meals with friends and family. Meals full of exotic food and your favorite strong cocktail, not dainty, pretentious food where you can’t tell if it’s a garnish or a main course. Similarly, this is not a minimalist look but its layers are what create the feeling of coziness and individuality. Feel free to remove a layer. Or add one. It’s your home and you should do what makes you happy!

As with most rooms, start your design with a piece you really love. It can be a rug, painting, or accessory. In this scenario, I started with this gold and white dining table. It feels clean and modern while bringing in a glam 70’s vibe.

Saturated colors are typically indicative of the Boho style. These green dining chairs bring in a natural feel as well as a moody vibe not to mention they look comfy enough to welcome guests for extended periods of time.

This rug from Ruggable has a nice balance of neutral colors and bold pattern. And the fact that it is washable makes it absolutely perfect for a dining room!

I have nothing against one large painting or a triptych but a gallery wall often feels more personal. And there is no rule that says a gallery wall has to be filled with prints/photos with the same theme (i.e. black and white photos with black frames, etc.). And if there was a rule about that, I would encourage you to break it. After all, that’s what the Boho style is all about.

In this proposed gallery wall I have combined three prints that aren’t necessarily in the same style but all coordinate. This wisteria print feels inviting and evokes a Secret Garden type mood. The use of greens, oranges, and white help to make the entire space feel cohesive. The navy floral print feels feminine yet moody, grounding the space. The portrait print brings a personal touch and makes the room feel collected and with some history.

These black plates add visual interest and contrast. The texture and finish add a handmade feel and keep the space relaxed. Even the most basic of take-out food would look well presented on these!

These ribbed glasses add a touch of elegance and another layer of texture, both visually and physically. And let’s be honest, they would make any drink look more exciting!

I realize that most people don’t think a whole lot about their mugs. Do they hold your coffee? Yes. Can they be put in the dishwasher? Hopefully! However once you experience these mugs from East Fork Pottery in Asheville, NC, your opinion might change. The mugs are sturdy, made by artisans, dishwasher and microwave safe, and best of all, made by a company with ethics. If you follow East Fork on social media, you know that they are very involved in the community and serving the underserved. I have a large collection of coffee mugs but my East Fork mugs are my usual go-tos. I can’t put it into words but every time someone uses one of mine they comment on how great they are. The handle fits your hand perfectly and once you hold them you will understand. Not to mention the look is spot-on for this cozy and moody Boho dining room. (No, this is not an ad - I truly just love them this much.)

One signature element of the Boho style is an assortment of accessories that have been gathered from travels or give the feeling of somewhere remote. The organic shape of this vase-inspired wooden table decor from World Market feels interesting but not formal. It adds visual interest without dominating the space.

This matte gold flatware adds a bit of shimmer and a modern edge without feeling gaudy.

This two tone napkin ring is a nice balance of modern and organic. It feels both natural and updated, adding a subtle layer of chic.

The color and pattern of these green and natural napkins coordinates well with the chairs and art in the room and is similar to the pattern of the rug, helping the room feel cohesive while still adding a layer of interest.

The 70’s arc/rainbow pattern can be found in so many items now. From rugs to clothing, it seems to be everywhere. However, there is something fresh and modern about this rainbow serving board that makes it feel unique and, dare I say, sexy. Perfect for those intimate dinner parties this room was made for.
