Organic Modern Primary Bath - Shop the Look

There is something about living near the beach that makes people want to embrace the coastal style, regardless of their general aesthetic. For this recent renovation, the homeowners have a modern yet rustic style but wanted their newly renovated home to feel light and airy. Modern design is often associated with dark colors, hard lines, and stark minimalism, not the light and organic sensibilities of a more traditional coastal style. Throw the rustic style in there and you have quite a challenge. So how does one blend the three styles without feeling disjointed? By designing in a style I call Organic Modernism.

In this post, we will focus on the renovation of the primary bathroom - a small but important part of this whole-home project. The homeowners had a small and dated space that didn’t represent their personalities and didn’t function well for their busy lifestyles. We decided to expand the footprint, allowing more space for a double vanity and larger walk-in shower. But more space wasn’t all they wanted. They wanted a space that felt relaxing and luxurious while marrying their favorite design styles. So how did we do it?

This is the initial proposal after meeting with the clients.

We started by blending the homeowners’ different styles by incorporating bright whites, natural elements like wood and marble, and modern lines. A traditional white vanity with a marble top brought in the airy coastal vibe while the clean lines of the cabinet pulls and faucets make it feel more modern. The shape of the vanity lights are modern and incorporate the same brushed brass finish found on the hardware and fixtures. A pair of mirrors above the vanity in a traditional shape bring in the warmth of wood and literally reflect the beautiful marsh view out the window.

In the shower we used hex tiles to bring a modern element to the coastal and traditional sensibilities of the marble. Champagne bronze fixtures from Delta keep the space feeling modern while bringing in the warmth of the coastal and rustic styles and tying in with the same brushed brass finish on the vanity and lighting. The large frameless shower doors keep the space light and bright and make the room feel larger and more open while adding the black accent which makes it feel grounded and substantial.

A concrete-like large format tile feels organic, rustic, and modern (the smaller mosaic version was used on the shower floor). The floating wood shelves are modern in style and rustic in finish.

After waiting a couple months for the entire renovation to be completed, the homeowners can finally enjoy the space and appreciate the increased functionality. One homeowner said, “I’m so happy with it! I feel like I’m in a fancy hotel every time I walk in there. But it’s MINE!”

Do any of these elements speak to you? Which would you incorporate in your own home?
